Appropriate Salutation

This gives the cover letter a personal touch like you are talking to the employer directly. It also hints that you have some interest in the company because you took the time to find out who’s reading the cover letter. For example, a salutation that indicates “To whom it may concerns” sounds less enthusiastic and personal than “Dear Mr. Jones.”

Interest and Qualifications

This part of the cover letter is where everyone messes up on. This is not the area to put your laundry list of accomplishment and achievements. No one cares that you hold the Guinness World Records of most chewing gums. What we do care about is why are you interested in the job, what experience that you have had in your past that makes you perfect for the job, and what can you contribute to the company. Include keywords

A lot of companies have a software that scans for specific keywords that match the job. If those keywords are nowhere to be found in your cover letter, then it would be thrown in the rejection file. for example, if you are applying for an executive position, then you want keywords like “contract negotiation,” “corporate accountability,” “corporate strategizing,” and “customer relations,” to be in your cover letter.

Closing the deal

Once you have listed all the pertinent information, now it’s time to close the deal and leave with a good impression. You want to be friendly and professional at the same time so make sure you do this correctly. Use words like “sincerely,” “best regards,” and “thank you.” After the closing, make sure to add a signature for a professional and personal touch.
