Proof of Residency Letter for Food Stamps

The Supplemental Nutritional Assistance Program, or SNAP, is what we now call what used to be known as Food Stamps. (In fact, most people still refer to it as Food Stamps.) In order to qualify for SNAP, you need to provide various proofs of your circumstances. One of these proofs is proof of residency. This is because SNAP varies a little from state to state and is, in fact, administered by each state for its residents.

It’s not difficult to create a proof of residency letter. There are many templates that you can download online to help you. Just take it to step by step, get all your information correctly entered in, and you will find that it is a very straightforward process.

Just one thing to note, as states vary a little in their requirements, it can be a good idea to check that the proof of residency letter that you have created complies with the needs of your state. You should be able to check this easily online.

Is Proof of Residency Important for Food Stamps?

Yes, proof of residency is very important if you want to claim food stamps or SNAP. It is one of the key documents that you will be expected to provide to the authority that is supplying this benefit. It might sound obvious, but you have to claim SNAP benefits in the state in which you actually live.

What Does a Proof Of Residency Letter Consist Of?

  • Proof of residency letter is a letter provided by a person who knows you that confirms that you live where you say you live.
  • This is what it should contain:
  • The full legal name of the person who is providing the letter
  • The street address, city, state, and zip code
  • The date that the document is being signed
  • The next two paragraphs of your proof of residence letter describe the relationship between you and the person who is confirming that you live at a particular address. The person confirming this should give their full legal name and their relations ship with you. (For example, landlord, grandmother, cousin, uncle, aunt). They also need to give their full address.
  • Then comes a paragraph that states your full legal name and your full address. It also states your relationship with the person providing the letter. (For example, tenant, granddaughter, cousin, niece, nephew).
  • The next part of the letter section is where you enter the information regarding how long you have been at the address concerned.
  • It is very helpful if you can provide proof of residence – for example, a lease, a rent book, or a mortgage document. Here you can state the proof that you are attaching to this letter.
  • Finally, two witnesses should complete the next section of the letter that confirms the information. They need to confirm the identity of the person who is providing you with your proof of residency. They should also state (under penalty of perjury) that the information in the letter is correct.
  • The residence confirmation document needs to be authorized by a Notary Public, who will complete a statement confirming that the information in the document is correct, and then signs and seals the residence confirmation letter.

Who is SNAP Intended to Help?

SNAP is intended to help people who are on a low income get the food and nutrition that they need. SNAP, or food stamps, comes in the form of a credit card that you can use in specific stores. Food stamps can only be used for actual food – not for cleaning materials, alcohol, and so on. The idea is that people can supplement their income by buying things like fresh vegetables and fruit, meat, eggs, milk, fish, and other staples. It is a right and not something that you should be ashamed of using.
