Apology Letter to Boss for Late Reporting

It’s always a good idea to send an apology letter to your manager if you are a little late for reporting. No matter the situation, it needs to be explained while the employee accepts responsibility for the action and offers a sincere apology. Late reporting can involve anything from not turning in data on a certain date to neglecting to make workers compensation claim on time. In our situation, the report was due by 3 p.m. Friday. Members of the division were anxious to discuss the results.

However, as the employee was late, valuable time was lost, which not only risks affecting morale, but making the employee look irresponsible.

Sample Apology Letter for Late Reporting

Dear Mr. Juno:

Please accept this letter of regret for not reporting to you when I knew I should have. This is not something that should have occurred, it was bad judgement on my part and I’d like to take this opportunity to apologize for the entire situation, and to state that I was totally aware of my lateness and how upset you must be because of it.

I understand that this caused you considerable anxiety and stress as our division was due to report the status of our project by 3 p.m. Friday. The knowledge that you have been so patient and understanding throughout our efforts to make certain that this project was perfect in all ways, then I turn around and neglect to give you the status reports when you requested them.

I accept full and total responsibility for the late reporting. I realize the confusion it caused and have spoken to my office team mates to see what can be done to rectify the situation. So far, the meetings I’ve had with them have been very productive. Sadly I became involved and immersed in the project, and neglected to make time to report to you as you requested.

I can promise that this will never happen and that I’ll take every precaution to keep in touch with both you and my team mates with regards to reporting my status, from post-it notes to computer alerts. As it looks now, I should never make this mistake again, and will work to prove to you that I can become a conscientious worker.

If there is anything else that I can do to make things right, and re-establish a good working relationship, then please do so and I’ll do my best to comply.

Yours Sincerely,
