Holiday office parties, business lunches and entertaining clients are just a few of the opportunities where employees often imbibe in their favorite alcoholic beverages, and as they say, not everyone can hold their liquor. In such cases, there may be time when an employee enjoys themselves a bit too much. In our following example, the incident occurs after work, off the time clock. However, the employee is spotted, and their behavior is noted in office gossip.
At this time, it is critical that the employee write a letter of apology to their boss to explain their behavior and state that it was wrong and will not happen again.
Sample Apology Letter to Boss for Being Drunk
Dear Mr. Tryon:
The purpose of this letter is to announce my apology to you and the company for my state of inebriation during the office Christmas party. According to my coworkers, my behavior dwarfed even one’s stereotypical view of what a ‘drunk’ would be. I understand the stress and disappointment that you and my co-workers feel, the embarrassment at my behavior has cost you much pain.
However, what is done is done. My actions caused you much distress. It must have been embarrassing to see your star employee acting in such a manner, one that not only distressed you, but also put our company in a bad light. After all, employees of some of our major competitors in the district also frequent the same after-hours bar in Midtown.
It seemed simple, just attending our favorite bar for a quick drink before heading home. However, as it happened, I met a few people I had not seen in years, and the few drinks turned into quite a few drinks. Unfortunately for me, several of my co-workers saw my display that night, and it became the talk of the office the next day. As a result, this was an unfortunate event, one that has left you in a state of sadness.
I have contacted Human Resources and inquired what steps that I can take to rectify this situation. They have decided that it would be a good idea to organize a workplace seminar to educate co-workers on how to deal with such situations, and how harmful gossip can be in the workplace.
I promise you that this will never happen again. If there is anything else, I can do to help you in this situation, please contact me and I’ll do everything in my power to fulfill whatever it is you need to be done.
